Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs of Sedation with a Nurse Anesthesiologist

Who will be administering my anesthesia?
Your anesthesia will be administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) — an advanced practice nurse specially trained in anesthesia. CRNAs are highly qualified healthcare professionals who provide safe, expert anesthesia care in both hospital and office-based settings.
What types of sedation are offered?
With a CRNA on our team, we offer the following anesthesia options:

IV Sedation (Moderate to Deep Sedation) – You’ll be in a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state, though not fully unconscious.
Oral Sedation – A prescribed medication taken prior to the procedure to ease anxiety and promote relaxation.
Local Anesthesia – Numbs the treatment area and is often combined with sedation for full comfort.
Is it safe to have anesthesia in office?
Yes. Our office is equipped to safely provide anesthesia, and your care is managed by a nurse anesthesiologist trained in outpatient and office-based anesthesia. Throughout your procedure, your vital signs—including heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and breathing—are continuously monitored.
Will I be fully asleep?
Most patients under IV sedation enter a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state and may not remember the procedure. You will still be breathing on your own and may respond to verbal cues. This is not the same as general anesthesia used in hospitals.
Why is a nurse anesthesiologist involved in my care?
Having a CRNA on-site ensures that a highly trained anesthesia provider is 100% focused on your sedation, safety, and monitoring throughout the procedure. This allows the proceduralist to focus entirely on your care.
How should I prepare for anesthesia?
No food or drink (including water) for 6 hours before your appointment.
• Wear loose, comfortable clothing with short sleeves.
• Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you after your procedure.
• Avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeine for 24 hours beforehand.
• Take only medications approved by your provider before your appointment.
Can I take my usual medications?
Yes, but you must tell us about all medications, supplements, and medical conditions ahead of time. Some medications may need to be adjusted or paused. The nurse anesthesiologist will review your health history and give specific guidance.
What does it feel like to be under sedation?
Most patients feel deeply relaxed and unaware of the procedure. You may drift in and out of light sleep. With IV sedation, you typically have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.
Are there any side effects or risks?
Common side effects include:

• Drowsiness
• Mild nausea
• Dry mouth
• Grogginess

Serious complications are extremely rare, especially when sedation is provided by a trained CRNA. Your safety is our highest priority, and emergency equipment is always available on-site.
Will insurance cover sedation with a CRNA?
Sedate Solutions does not file with insurance. Your provider will give you the necessary documentation for you to submit to your insurance.
What should I do after the procedure?
• You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the day.
Rest for at least 24 hours. Avoid driving, alcohol, and making important decisions.
• Follow all post-operative instructions provided by your anesthesia team.
How long is the recovery?
Most patients feel significantly better within a few hours and can return to normal activities the following day. However, full recovery depends on the type of sedation and your individual response.
What if I have health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure?
Our CRNA will carefully review your medical history and consult with your physician if needed. Many patients with chronic health conditions can safely undergo sedation with proper planning and monitoring.
Can children or special needs patients receive sedation with a CRNA?
Yes. CRNAs are trained to provide anesthesia across the lifespan. If your child or a loved one with special needs requires sedation, we will create a customized plan to ensure their comfort and safety.
